BRIEFING
Facts about Certification
A teacher is someone who has students. Having more students shows that many people trust you to teach them. Imagine a teacher with many diplomas and prizes, but no students.
The International Certification states that a student has taken classes at a given school; it is issued at the request of the School Director. Students need it for their career as proof of their studies – they will prefer your school because you offer it.
You do not need to have your students examined by someone else, unless the examiner is much more qualified than you are.
Beware of “organizations” offering diplomas, titles or prizes, they are usually commercial businesses in disguise. Such documents have no legal value.

BRIEFING
Breakdancing in the Olympic Games
Breakdancing has been renamed ‘breaking’ to be included in the Olympics as a sport.
Dancers have been disguised as athletes with the promise of earning more money.
Spectators are deceived.
Dance is one of the major arts, together with theater and music, it is not a competitive sport.
This is not the first time – ballroom dancing has been renamed to dancesport with the same intention. What is next: ballet, belly dance, folk dance?
It is deplorable to see the noble Olympic spirit having to kidnap dances from the arts, inventing sports to provide new spectacles in a similar spirit as gladiators in Roman arenas.
Sports receive a hundred times more financing than the Arts, artists demand equality.
Games, leave the Arts alone!

BRIEFING
Diplomas, prizes, licenses, championships etc.
Anyone can print a diploma, the question is whether it is recognized. Ask a government agency or a lawyer if a qualification has legal value.
- Diplomas by private bodies do not have legal value. They are very private even if they have pompous names like International, Royal, Imperial, Confederation, Institute etc.
- Diplomas issued abroad are not valid in your country. Ask the Ministry of Education or any public agency.
- Most teachers refuse to have their students examined. Some have them examined by teachers of their own school.
- Examiners are not more qualified than you. Ask for their qualifications before you pay.
- Most examiners pass all students. That is why they never post their results.
- Titles are incompatible. Diplomas are not recognized by holders of other diplomas.
- Examiners are costly. Examining is just another business.
- Examinations for artists? Painters, musicians, poets, actors do not need examinations. Neither do dancers.

BRIEFING
Diplomas, prizes, licenses, championships etc.

Ask the Ministry of Education or any public agency.
3. Most teachers refuse to have their students examined
Some have them examined by teachers of their own school.
4. Examiners are rarely more qualified than school directors
Ask for their qualifications before you pay.
5. Most examiners pass all students
That is why they never post their results.
6. Titles are incompatible
Diplomas are not recognized by holders of other diplomas.
7. Examiners are costly
Examining is just another business.
8. Examinations for artists?
Painters, musicians, poets, actors do not need examinations. Why do dancers need?

BRIEFING
USA returns to UNESCO
The United States announced it will rejoin UNESCO after a decade of withdrawal. It will contribute actively in deliberations and pay $600 million in back dues.
This move will strengthen UNESCO in shaping developments in culture, education, science and technology by setting world standards.
Dance professionals look forward to enhancing the educational role of dance. CID is advocating for dance as primarily a means for educating body and mind – it should be an integral part of the curriculum of public schools.
When the International Theater Institute (UNESCO’s organization for theater, www.iti-worldwide.org) moved its headquarters from Paris to Shanghai and the Emirates, many questions were raised. Will this art be considered a mere entertainment, something like the circus? The educational role of theater was central in ancient Greek drama, which is taught to actors and liberal arts students all over the world – it should not be abandoned.
UNESCO is where cultural issues are discussed at the highest level. Decisions taken shape the policy of governments. A stronger UNESCO means artists and educators become stronger.

05. Gain experience as a volunteer
If you are between 18 and 30, you can volunteer with the European Solidarity Corps in your home country or abroad. On the other hand, CID has vacancies for volunteers to spread information on dance.
BRIEFING
Intellectual property in dance
Trying to secure rights on an artistic creation (a choreography, a teaching method etc.) is costly, lengthy and easy to circumvent.
CID represents the interests of dancers at the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva www.wipo.int
What we suggest:
– If you really need copy rights consult a lawyer specialized in the relevant legislation and jurisprudence, not any lawyer.
– Disseminate your creation widely – the more people know it is yours the more its value increases (and copying is discouraged).
– Present your work at a congress, a festival or another important event where records are kept, it is a way to prove later that you are the creator.
– The more students you have the more you are recognized. The International Certification confirms your teaching and brings students – they will show it throughout their career, making you and your teaching method known widely.

is dedicated to the 50 years of CID. There is no central event, each dance professional celebrates DD in her/his own way. CID founded Dance Day (do not believe others who claim it) but does not claim rights – it belongs to all dancers in the world. Read at your event the official message below.
The official message for
Dance Day
29 April 2023
www.DanceDay.CID-world.org
Same as theater, music and plastic arts, dance has its own global organization. In 2023 CID celebrates its 50th anniversary. Rather than describe what CID does, I use the opportunity to say what it does not.
The main difference with all other dance organizations is that CID is not linked to a particular country. It was founded within the UNESCO headquarters, that is on diplomatic grounds where no government has jurisdiction. Thus members are secure that policy will not reflect a single nationality or culture or approach to dance.
CID does not provide dance education, does not organize events, does not sell anything, so it does not compete with its members – it promotes their work and helps them upgrade it.
CID does not have a permanent leadership, it holds elections every four years where all members vote.
It has no representatives, its members are equal and are linked directly to headquarters.
Such unique features constitute the power of CID, it treats dance professionals as real members, not customers.
Our great family will continue to grow in the next 50 years, making you proud and successful.
Prof. Dr. Alkis Raftis
President of the International Dance Council
CID, UNESCO, Paris
- The official message for Dance Day is sent to dance professionals in 200 countries. Translate the message to your language, post it online, send it to the printed media. Find guidelines for your own celebration as well as previous DD messages at www.DanceDay.CID-world.org
2. Dance Day, every year on 29 April, established in 1982 and monitored by CID, aims at attracting attention to the art of dance. It is celebrated by millions of dancers around the globe. On that day dance professionals organize an event addressing an audience different from their usual one.

BRIEFING
Competitions
Before taking part in a competition:
- Check the organizer
– Use the CID Checklist for Organizations https://CID-world.org/international-organizations/2. Check the nature of the competition
– Just a business selling awards or a genuine not-for-profit association?
– Enjoying government support?
– Who guarantees that procedures will be fair?
– Well established after a successful history, or a grab-the-money-and-run thing?3. Check previous competitions
– How many awards, prizes, titles, championships were given?
– What was the ratio of awards to participants? Did everyone win?
– Did they give receipts of payment? Did they publish a financial report?4. Check the jury
– Are they very highly qualified professionals?
– Are they really neutral, not having vested interests?
– Were they appointed by an independent body?
– Are the jurors called judges or adjudicators to create an impression of impartiality?5. Remember
– Titles offered by private organizers do not have legal value and are not recognized.
– Being declared a winner in a small or discredited competition is not an asset in your profile.

BRIEFING
Diplomas, prizes, licenses, championships etc.
1. Diplomas by private bodies do not have legal value
They are very private even if they have pompous names like International, Royal, Imperial, Confederation etc.
2. Diplomas issued abroad are not valid in your country

BRIEFING
Definitions of choreography
Most definitions are partial, take “the sequence of steps and movements in dance or figure skating, especially in a ballet or other staged dance” or “the art of composing ballets and other dances and planning and arranging the movements, steps, and patterns of dancers”.
The term choreography is a misnomer since it combines two Greek roots: chor- (dance) and graph- (write) implying the simple writing down of dances. But a choreographer does not only notate, he/she composes dances, just like a composer creates music. There is an analogy with the director of a theatrical play or cinema film, although he/she has a script to follow.
It would be more accurate to call a choreographer ‘dance composer’ or ‘dance director’, but it is too late to change a firmly established term.
My own definition is: Choreography is the architecture of movement. It is complete since it contains imagining a structure and building it. Every dance is actually a construction using movements as material. A choreographer is a movement architect.

BRIEFING
Fraud in dance
Fake organizations
We often receive complaints regarding events proposed by organizations claiming national or international status. The internet is full of fraudulent activity and dance could not be an exception. This checklist will help you uncover fictitious organizations.
- Does the “organization” have a legal status, offices, salaried staff, a budget, a bank account, a long history?
2. Is it accredited by government agencies or independent authorities?
3. Who are its leaders, do they have sufficient credentials (read their profile), are they directly elected by all members?
4. Ask for documents printed and signed. Look for names, fixed phone numbers and street addresses (no PO boxes)
5. Do you vote for the leadership? If you don’t you are not a member, you are a customer.
6. Names like International, Universal, Royal, Imperial, Institute, Conservatory etc. can be used by anyone – see who is behind.
7. Before registering for an event check the organizer. Ask for a legal receipt of payment.
Find events or send announcement of your event to be posted at www.Panorama.CID-world.org the official portal for dance events.

BRIEFING
Dancing in the rain
Return to proven, time-honored, basic notions – like Mother Nature. Get out of the studio – teach and perform in parks, yards, lawns, sports venues, open spaces, beaches.
Dance was born under the sky and continued so for thousands of years. Villagers danced every Sunday afternoon in the village square. Ballet and Indian classical forms evolved from performances by itinerant artists who set up stages in vacant lots.
It will take some adaptations: providing music, laying a floor, changing costumes – but these are practical details. The main issue is changing the attitude of people – the teacher’s role is to guide them towards a natural activity, free from worries, free from boundaries.
Dance was not meant to take place indoors, it gradually turned into classes within four walls, shows in closed theaters and video clips on screens.
Try dancing in the sunshine or in the moonlight, breathing fresh air, try dancing in the rain!

04. Dance Day 29 April
This year Dance Day is dedicated to solidarity among dancers. Please forward it to newspapers, TV and social media.
Prepare your event for Dance Day, visit the official website www.DanceDay.CID-world.org
Dance Day belongs to all dancers and to no one in particular. CID has founded Dance Day and offered it to the world, does not want to own it. Ignore those trying to highjack Dance Day for their own purposes, the have flooded the internet with fake news.
The official message for
Dance Day
29 April 2022
www.DanceDay.CID-world.org
This message is written as rockets hit residential buildings and people fight in the streets. It is probably too optimistic to hope that people on the 29th of April will be dancing in the streets celebrating peace. The situation demands from dancers to show solidarity to other dancers. Individuality and ‘do it alone’ people are out of fashion.
Many people are eager to help but they risk falling victims of scam. It is very difficult to distinguish between genuine and fake organizations, websites, people, news etc. You can trust only those you have known for many years, only those with a long history of a serious policy you agree with – certainly not those who promise to do now what they have never done before. The past is the best guarantee for the future.
CID will not act as intermediary. We advocate direct person-to-person communication, assistance and collaboration. This is what we propose:
– Go to the Global Dance Directory. Type keywords like: name of city, type of dance etc. Try various keywords.
– Find dance professionals and call them, or ask CID for their email address.
– Tell them you care, ask what they need
– Send what you can
– Maintain contact, give courage to overcome hardships, prepare cooperation after the crisis.
This is not the moment for romantic outbursts on the virtues of dance and nice-sounding but vague assertions. Dance, after being severely hit by the pandemic is now hit by armed conflict and the prospect of cold war on a global scale. It is the time for concrete action and tangible results, a time for dancers getting together to advance united.
Prof. Dr. Alkis Raftis
President of the International Dance Council
CID, UNESCO, Paris
